The Boulangerie concert format

Welcome to the Boulangerie!

Nadia Boulanger
Nadia Boulanger

The idea for this concert series came to us on the one hand from our namesake Nadia and Lili Boulanger; on the other hand, it arose from the desire to let our listeners participate in our work and the encounters with contemporary composers and thus to be able to share our enthusiasm for music.
The French sisters Nadia and Lili Boulanger were born in Paris at the end of the 19th century. Lili, a gifted composer, died at the age of 24. Nadia lived until 1979 and became one of the most important music teachers of the time, teaching composers such as Leonard Bernstein, Philip Glass and Astor Piazzolla, but also Quincy Jones and Daniel Barenboim.
Her lessons also included the legendary Wednesday meetings in her Parisian apartment on Rue Ballu, affectionately known by her students as the “Boulangerie”. There they met for joint analyzes, e.g. Bach’s fugues. But new works were also tried out, and artists from various fields were often among those present. Afterwards there was a lively exchange over tea and pastries.
We also love exchanging ideas with our audience and are always happy to have stimulating conversations and exciting discussions. Added to this is our curiosity about today’s music. It is always exciting and enriching to get to know the person who is behind a work. We would like to share these encounters with you and talk to our respective guest composer on stage in the middle of the concert. After the concert, like Nadia Boulanger’s students back then, you are invited to have a bite to eat and drink in order to continue the conversation with us and the composer.
There is also a little special feature: As far as the program is concerned, our composer has a carte blanche, so to speak. He or she can put together the program for his or her own works. The only condition is that the other pieces should be from the Classical, Romantic, or Classical Modern periods. Because we are enthusiastic about the music from all epochs, as an expression of their respective time!

We hope to see you soon in our Boulangerie!
