Concentrated female passion

"Pure women ensembles are rather rare, especially of such high quality as the Boulanger Trio. A sold-out hall was to be expected. Certainly primarily due to the anticipatory excellent reputation. In terms of applause, which didn't even want to end after two encores, the ensemble from Berlin has even exceeded the high expectations. The trio probably owed such euphoria primarily to its high homogeneity down to the finest detail, in the sense of feminine sensitivity. But this should not be understood as a careful approach - quite the contrary. The trio showed passionate playing, voluminous in the dense passages, but above all extremely gripping in its dramaturgy."

Boulanger Trio plays Beethoven

"When the Boulanger Trio starts with the first notes of Beethoven's piano trio in G major op. 121a, the listener is almost swept off the chair: such an unexpectedly concentrated musical power is made audible by this ensemble. Every stroke of the bow, every touch of the piano is involved in the energetics of the phrase and is a carrier of the musical character. The trio succeeds in bundling this to immense density. This is due to the unusual musical closeness which exists among the musicians."

Night light: Boulanger Trio at the Radialsystem

"With her compact grip pianist Karla Haltenwanger drives violinist Birgit Erz and cellist Ilona Kindt to an intensity which represents truth of expression rather than a beautiful sound for its own sake.
Also in „Tristia – La Vallée d’Obermann“ by Franz Liszt such an existential richness of colours is predominant. Filigree hints rise from deep abysses to blinding ecstasy."

One hardly dares to breathe

"The three women of the Boulanger Trio shape Schoenberg's music [...] with exceptional sensuality and intensity. With rapidly changing gestures and states, bliss and depression, fear and confidence, abyss and idyll, resignation and euphoria stand closely to each other. One hardly dares to breathe when Haltenwanger, Erz and Kindt let the Wagneresque magic Valkyre fire shimmer and the "Transfigured Night" ends in the most tender pianissimo. [...] A very gratifying chamber music evening."

State of euphoria of rhythm and sound

"The promising matinee of the Boulanger Trio came to an end with the „Spring morning“ by Lili Boulanger, full of light, hope and joy. As promising as this music one wishes the carreer of the young ensemble to develop. [...]
What other piano trios often are often struggling with for a long time is a given for the Boulangers: the optimal balance between piano and strings. Here no competition is taking place, one rather has the impression that the three musicians play on a single shared instrument, from whose spectrum they all participate in equal shares. [...]
In the center of the program was the „Fremde Szene III“ by Wolfgang Rihm, and in the following interview the musicians stressed once more how much the work with contemporary composers means to them. Their commitment is so stirring that the work by Rihm received the most applause.“

Boulanger Trio brings past to life

"Almost too perfectly the romantic and contemporary works are corresponding, and almost too perfect is the ensemble playing of the Boulanger Trio on Sunday at the Mendelssohn Hall of the Gewandhaus. Schumann's third trio in g minor in its richness of moods seems to be created for the Boulangers with their phenomenal feeling for details in articulation and an elegant and musical interplay."

Evolutionary steps of New Music

""If Rihm can be played like this, we don't need Schumann anymore", one wanted to shout out after the powerful and virtuosic performance of the neoromantic-ecstatic "Fremde Szenen" by Wolfgang Rihm with the Boulanger Trio from Berlin, who had before played Dieter Schnebel's Quintet in B flat major (with guests) in a stirring way and conveyed the feeling that an evolutionary step in the art of interpretation of new music is approaching."

Vague Worlds

"Then Schnebel's B flat major quintet was swept out of the hall by the neoexpressionistic „Fremde Szenen“ by Rihm - adorably existentially played by the Boulanger Trio."

Well achieved bridging

"One of the most faszinating moments of the recording by the Boulanger Trio is the fact that the three musicians cultivate a distinct musical gesture for every one of the three works recorded. [...] The sound realization of the Boulanger Trio is full of variety, full of fine nuances (especially in the sound shaping of the string players) and of high subtlety in the adjustment of the three voices. It is great chamber music interaction how in the first movement the piano once colours the background, once plays itself into the foreground and then drops down again. [...] The different moods are captured amazingly well by the Boulanger Trio, often not only opposed firmly but also formed into layers one over the other. [...]
A fully convincing recording."

Refreshing curiosity

"A tingle is lying in the air at the final Concert entitled "Perspektives" at the museum in Heilbronn. As well as silence, outburst, spirit of contradiction. The Boulanger Trio condenses the complex motives by Art-Oliver Simons to a kind of musical plastic [...]. The trio approaches the compositions with unorthodox passion for experiment and a refreshing curiosity."

Work by Wolfgang Rihm becomes highlight of Hitzacker festival

"So the emotionally overwhelming work "Fremde Szene II" by Wolfgang Rihm, an equally challenging piece for players and listeners, became the highlight of contemporary music at this year's festival. And here the Boulanger Trio played as brillantly as stirringly passionate that one was filled with wonder."

Schubert evening with surprises

"The piano trio No. 2 in E flat major (by Franz Schubert) was presented by the Boulanger Trio which was in a splendid mood. The musicians listened intensively into the four movements, explored contrasts, characters and motives. The result was a cosmos of sound, fascinating and full of temperament, alongside moments of fragility. A first grade performance which was hailed by the audience."

Music of Passion and Playfulness

Essentially responsible for this great moment of chamber music was the brillant interpretation of Schubert's Trio in E flat major, offered by the Boulanger Trio - an interpretation where all along their inspiration made sparkling lightening dance.
The trio played the work with delicacy, with a lean but glowing sound and flexible rhythm. Contrasts were realised firmly, but understated: the melancholy of the funeral march's melody in the Andante con moto for example was opposed by harsh outbursts. The trio of the third movement, following the playful Scherzando canon, was coloured brusquely and wildly, the last movement combined longing and playfulness.
Last year Wolfgang Rihm had described the Boulanger Trio's interpretation of one of his works as "fulfilment of my dreams" - also this time the profound sovereignty of the ensemble which had evoked the praise defined the performance.

"...the phenomenal Boulanger Trio..."

Concert in Bersenbrück

“Without giving up their own artistic identities, the young musicians bow to the music with full commitment and develop an art of interaction which captivates the audience.  [ ...] Breathtaking to hear and see with which intensity the artists bring to life this tricky score with sheer weightless playing.”
Hans Gerhard Heymel

Concert at the Barlach Museum, Hamburg

„Well, also to us the romantic soul is no stranger – so we recently left the Barlach Haus quite stirred up. Not because once more we succumbed to the female charms (although there was plenty of reason for it): No, above all it was the playing of the three young ladies of the Boulanger Trio, who walked through all ups and downs of expression and moved us strongly. Full of passion the musicians seemed to want to explore the grounds of the soul.“

Concert in Heide

You will have to remember the name “Boulanger Trio”, if you love chamber music. The young ensemble plays the works of the old masters with such courage and a passionate freshness that they shine in new splendour.
With Joseph Haydn’s trio in A major they opened the concert and celebrated it as pure joy of life. Already at the very beginning it became clear that three full-blooded musicians worked for a common aim: to acquire Haydn’s musical language.

"The Boulanger's Schubert Trio in E flat D 929 was the most insightful and compelling performance - the musicians played with intuition, control and a shared vision."

Sommerliche Musiktage Hitzacker

"No certainties, a play with extremes: the members of the Boulanger Trio totally got involved with this distracting world of sound, placed every note, every change of mood of this tour de force as energetically as precisely, blended vehemency with musicality."
